How do I paint a light color over a dark wall?
Short answer
Prime first with a good hiding primer, ideally tinted gray or toward your new color, then apply two coats of the new paint. Skipping primer usually means three or four coats of expensive finish paint and uneven color.Steps
- Clean and lightly scuff the wall if the old paint has any sheen.
- Ask the paint counter to tint your primer. Gray primer works well under many colors; tinting toward the finish color helps with light tones.
- Roll one full coat of primer and let it dry.
- Apply two coats of the new color.
Going dark over light
Deep colors, especially reds and yellows, often need a gray or deep-tinted primer too. Those pigments hide poorly on their own, which is why a bright red can take four coats without it.
