How long should paint dry between coats?
Short answer
Most interior latex paints can be recoated in 2 to 4 hours, and oil-based paints need about 24 hours. Always follow the recoat time on the can, and add time in cold or humid weather. Dry to the touch is not the same as ready to recoat, and full cure takes weeks.Dry, recoat, cure
- Dry to the touch: often 30 to 60 minutes for latex.
- Ready to recoat: usually 2 to 4 hours for latex, 16 to 24 hours for oil.
- Fully cured: roughly 2 to 4 weeks for latex, about a week or more for oil. Be gentle with washing and furniture until then.
What slows it down
Temperatures under about 60 degrees, high humidity, thick coats and poor airflow all stretch drying time. In a North Country basement or a cool spring day, give it extra time and run a fan or dehumidifier.
