How many coats of paint do I need?
Short answer
Plan on two coats for almost every wall, even with paint-and-primer products. One coat can work when you're repainting the same color over a clean surface. Big color changes, new drywall, repairs and cheaper paints can need a primer coat plus two finish coats.Rules of thumb
- Same color, good paint, clean wall: one coat may be enough. Check it in daylight.
- New color, similar lightness: two coats.
- Light over dark, or deep reds, yellows and oranges: tinted primer plus two coats.
- New drywall: drywall primer plus two coats.
- Exterior bare wood: primer plus two top coats for the longest life.
Why two thin coats beat one thick one
A single heavy coat sags, dries unevenly and stays soft longer. Two thinner coats give even color, full film thickness and much better durability, which is what the warranty on the can assumes.
