Can I paint latex over oil-based paint?
Short answer
Yes, but not directly. Clean the surface, scuff sand it to dull the gloss, and apply a bonding primer rated for oil-based surfaces. Then use latex over it. Latex applied straight over oil tends to peel off in sheets. How to tell if old paint is oil
Rub a small spot with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. If paint comes off on the cotton, it's latex. If nothing happens, it's likely oil-based. Trim and doors in older homes very often are.
Steps
- Degrease and rinse.
- Sand with 120 to 150 grit until the shine is gone.
- Wipe off dust.
- Apply a bonding primer.
- Topcoat with latex enamel.
