Can I paint over wallpaper?
Short answer
You can, but removal is usually better. If the paper is tightly bonded, seal it with an oil-based or shellac primer first, because water-based paint can make the paper bubble and seams lift. Loose, textured or vinyl paper should come off.If you paint over it
- Glue down loose seams and edges.
- Skim coat seams so they don't show.
- Prime with an oil-based or shellac-based primer.
- Paint with two coats.
If you remove it
Score the paper, soak with warm water and a little fabric softener or a wallpaper remover, then scrape. Wash off leftover paste, since paste residue causes cracking and poor adhesion, then prime with a drywall primer before painting.
