What should I know about lead paint in older homes?
Short answer
Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint, which is dangerous when scraped, sanded or heated into dust, especially for children and pregnant women. Federal EPA rules require contractors who disturb painted surfaces in these homes to be EPA Lead-Safe Certified firms and to contain, clean and verify their work. For homeowners
- Test before sanding or scraping. Lead test kits and certified inspectors are available.
- Never dry sand, power sand or use a heat gun over 1100 degrees on lead paint.
- Hire an EPA Lead-Safe Certified firm, and expect plastic containment, special cleanup and a slightly higher price.
- Your contractor should give you the EPA Renovate Right pamphlet before work starts.
