How do I pick the right white paint?

Short answer

Decide whether you want a warm white (slight yellow, red or beige undertone that feels soft) or a cool white (slight blue or gray that feels crisp). Compare several whites on the wall next to each other and next to your trim, cabinets and flooring. The difference becomes obvious side by side.

Guidelines

  • Warm whites suit wood floors, older homes and north-facing rooms.
  • Cool or clean whites suit modern spaces, gray stone and bright south-facing rooms.
  • Use one trim white throughout the house for continuity.
  • Pure, untinted whites can look stark on walls. Most people prefer a white with a little depth.
