Timing and products for Northern New York weather.
When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Northern New York?
Late May through mid September is the prime window in Northern New York. You want several dry days, temperatures within the range on the can (often 50 degrees and up, or 35 and up for cold-rated paints), and enough daytime warmth for the paint to set before evening dew. Early fall can be excellent if nights stay above freezing.
Full answerHow cold is too cold to paint outside?
Standard exterior latex paints need about 50 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer, and many premium formulas are rated down to 35 degrees. What matters is the air and surface temperature staying above that minimum while the paint dries, plus the surface being at least 5 degrees above the dew point so moisture doesn't condense on it.
Full answerCan I paint when it's humid or rainy?
Interior painting is fine in humid weather if you allow longer drying time and keep air moving. Outside, avoid painting when rain is coming within the dry time on the can, when surfaces are damp, or late in the day when dew will form. High humidity can cause surfactant leaching: sticky, brownish streaks that usually wash off.
Full answerHow often should a house exterior be repainted?
Painted wood siding typically needs repainting every 5 to 10 years, stained wood every 3 to 7, and fiber cement every 10 to 15. Sun exposure, moisture, paint quality and prep make the biggest difference. Repaint when you see fading, chalking, cracking or peeling, before bare wood is exposed.
Full answerIs winter a good time for interior painting?
Yes. Winter is often the best time to book interior painting in the North Country, because painters have more openings once exterior season ends. Keep the house at 50 degrees or warmer (ideally 60 to 70), open a window a crack or run a fan for fresh air, and allow a bit more drying time.
