How cold is too cold to paint outside?
Short answer
Standard exterior latex paints need about 50 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer, and many premium formulas are rated down to 35 degrees. What matters is the air and surface temperature staying above that minimum while the paint dries, plus the surface being at least 5 degrees above the dew point so moisture doesn't condense on it.Cold-weather rules
- Check the forecast low for the night, not just the daytime high.
- Start after morning dew has burned off and stop early enough to dry before sunset.
- Never paint on frost, damp wood or when rain is expected within the dry time on the can.
