What is the difference between flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss paint?
Short answer
Sheen is how much light the dried paint reflects. From least to most shiny: flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. Lower sheens hide wall flaws but are harder to clean. Higher sheens are tougher and wipe clean but highlight every dent, patch and roller mark.Where each sheen fits
- Flat: ceilings and low-traffic walls. Hides the most.
- Matte: living rooms and bedrooms where you want a soft look with some washability.
- Eggshell: the most common wall choice. Slight glow, easier to wipe.
- Satin: hallways, kids' rooms, kitchens, baths and exteriors.
- Semi-gloss: trim, doors, cabinets, and bathrooms.
- Gloss: front doors, railings, furniture and accents. Shows every flaw.
Keep in mind
Names aren't standardized. One brand's eggshell can look like another's satin, so compare actual samples. When touching up, match both the color and the sheen or the patch will show.
