What paint works on basement concrete or block walls?
Short answer
Fix water problems first, then use a masonry primer and a paint made for concrete and block, such as a masonry waterproofing coating or an acrylic masonry paint. Regular wall paint on damp concrete will blister and peel. White powder (efflorescence) must be scrubbed off before painting. Before you paint
- Tape a square of plastic to the wall for a day or two. Moisture under it means water is coming through, so address grading, gutters or drainage first.
- Wire brush and clean off efflorescence and loose material.
- Patch cracks with a masonry patch.
